Cheap Long Distance For Land Lines

If you are "old school" like me and use a land line, there are a few good options for free or cheap long distance:

Skype.com is one although you need to have a headphone/microphone hooked up to your computer to use it and if the people you are calling also have it then it is Free. Otherwise you pay a couple cents per minute.

MagicJack is a device you can buy at any BestBuy or on the net and it plugs into your computer with software. It's around $30 for the device which includes one year of service, then it's $19.95 or less per year of service after that depending on how many years you buy ahead of time.

You can use this with a headphone and mic like Skype and calls are free to any phone once you have it and you can even carry the small device with you when you travel and plug it in to any computer at your friend's place or internet cafe' (if they allow that).

I use MagicJack and am happy with it though there is a bit of a lag when you talk so it's not quite up to "regular" long distance quality.

The one I use most often is onesuite.com which is a pay as you go long distance service. You sign up for free and then "charge" your account with $10 or more at a time and that allows you to call anyone in the U.S. for 2.5 cents a minute and other countries are often around that same price or not too much more, and this works through your regular telephone land line. It has "speed dialing" so you enter the number you are calling from on the net, then you only have to call the local access number (in your area code) then just dial the number you want to call as normal.

Free Spyware and Virus protection programs

I know it is hard to surf the Internet without virus or spyware protection & those can be expensive.  I found a good spyware protection & it is Free.  It is called SUPERAntiSpyware.com  Just do a Google search & you will find it.

AVG and ZoneAlarm are two anti-virus programs that offer free versions and are well respected.

Volunteers of America - Homeless Assistance

Volunteers of America works to prevent and end homelessness for individuals and families. As one of the largest recipients of federal homeless assistance grants, Volunteers of America reaches out to homeless individuals through street outreach and mobile outreach services.  Once Volunteers of America engages homeless individuals, youth and families with children, we stay with them for as long as it takes to return them to self-sufficiency — providing assistance that ranges from paying a first month’s rent to offering permanent supportive housing so that people with disabilities can become stable and productive members of their communities.
